Richard “Dick” Lukso started his aviation career with Bill Lear, at Lear Inc., in 1956, where he started as a technician in autopilot and flight instrument development. Dick exceled at Lear and received the patent for aviation’s first ‘gearless’ attitude indicator that ultimately ended up on the B747.
Throughout his successful career, Dick developed and pioneered leading edge technologies related to precision battery charging concepts. He patented over 20 different new battery charging and power processes that are used in aircraft flying today, domestically and internationally. Dick was also one of the authors of the airborne battery certification documents RTCA DO-293A (Nickel-Metal-Hydride Batteries) and DO-311 (Lithium-Ion Batteries).
Along side Dick over the past 15 years, have been his sons and grandson, Dennis, Rick and Nick, all of whom have engineering backgrounds and have captured all the brilliance that Dick has shared.
The result: a close-knit, dedicated group of battery specialist focused on new products that last longer, charge faster with in-house developed power management systems that delivers safe, reliable, cost-effective solutions.

Consortia’s Proprietary Chemistry Composition
Consortia’s proprietary chemistry composition offers a high energy density, good low-temperature performance, long shelf life, ease to recycle at end of life, low volatility, and no regulatory shipping restrictions. This use of Consortia’s proprietary chemistry composition has allowed the CES-170 to provide an output capacity of over 2.4 Ah in comparison to the competitors 1.75 Ah and an improved reliability over NiCad’s cell memory issues. Consortia’s proprietary chemistry composition cells provide a dramatic increase in cycle life of the internal battery module.
Partial Output Power Pass-Through System
This design feature allows the unit to provide power to the Emergency Lighting System from the 28 V bus when it is available. This prevents cycling of the batteries during Final Approach (FAP) and improves reliability and service life of the internal battery module.
Self-Resetting Overcurrent Solid-State Output Switches
Each of the five outputs can interrupt power in the event of a short-circuit without the need to be removed for service or repair. The DIEHL 3400’s use of passive fuses requires the unit to be removed from the aircraft and repaired after an over-current event. The use of self-resetting overcurrent switches eliminates downtime and repair costs due to over-current events, which is a primary reason for un-schedule removal of DIEHL 3400.
No Internal Heater
Due to the extended low temperature performance of Consortia’s proprietary chemistry composition cells, the heater can be omitted without any impact to unit’s performance. This improves reliability and operational costs.
Output Status Indicators (LEDs)
Allows users to see the status of the outputs when in operation or in test mode. This improves installation and service activities involving the CES-170 ELPU.
Direct Form-Fit-Function Replacement for the DIEHL 3400 Series ELPU
The CES-170 is designed to replace the DIEHL 3400 Series ELPU without any modification to the aircraft. Uses the same Main Receptacle / Connector (D38999-20FD18PN) and mounts in the same configuration.
